About Laura Ashley – born Laura Mountney, (1925-1985), Welsh designer who combined nostalgic beauty and romantic design with natural materials and her own colours. In 1953 she started to produce headscarves in Audrey Hepburn-style (as worn in the movie Roman Holiday, 1953) which sold incredibly well. In 1968 she and her husband, Bernard Albert Ashley, opened their own shop in London.
In the 1960s Laura Ashley pioneered ankle-length cotton dresses, While in the 1970s Laura Ashely made dresses with ruffles, high collars and puffed sleeves popular. The success was so great that in 1974 they opened shops in Paris and San Francisco, and during the 1970s Laura Ashley grew into a global success which in 1979 expanded further with a line of home furnishings which these days is the companies biggest sector. Laura Ashley used until the 1980s, only substances in pure cotton, often printed with flowers or checkers, inspired by patterns from the 18th and 19th centuries Her designs also include household textiles such as wallpapers, tablecloths and lampshades. Laura Ashley is buried in Carno, Powys.
